Safety First

Many of us have already fired up the grill for the spring, but any weekend will draw a crowd to the smell of a great barbecue meal. Whether at home or at the cottage a few general reminders will ensure your barbecue is trouble free.

It seems like summer might be arriving soon, but not soon enough for the many folks waiting to hit the ball diamonds, outdoor soccer pitches and any other outdoor facilities. As we hurry to get out onto the field of play, make sure you consider your surroundings. As much as the City, community club or school can do to ensure our safety when we use a ball diamond or sports facility, we need to make sure we do our part as well. Check your surroundings for broken glass, sharp objects like needles, trash and ensure the play space is safe.

Well the snow has finally melted enough that skateboarders and cyclists are starting to appear on city streets. There is still plenty of snow and road gravel along the sides, so motorists please share the road with cyclists giving them room to maneuver. Cyclists please also use proper hand signals and observe the rules of the road. Our roadways are two way streets to be shared.

Well, the slow spring melt has begun, though many of us would rather be golfing versus shoveling snow. I had to chuckle this week while listening to a radio program the Mayor of Regina was guessing that the huge snow ‘mountain’ created in Regina from snow dumping might still be around by September. Yikes, that must be one large mountain of snow or a very cold summer. A sure sign of spring is of course the dirty vehicles, small, yes small patches of brown grass and all the winter garbage.

While a large percentage of injuries occur outside of the workplace, the workplace can be a dangerous place each and every day. Through efforts like safety footwear, hearing protection, ergonomics like better chairs, many workplaces do achieve a high degree of injury free days. But what happens when we leave the workplace?

Winter travels always brings many challenges to our daily routine especially when are buckling small children in and out of their car seat. Safety is paramount and making sure that your child is buckled in tight in to their car seat is crucial.

Stand up, speak up, say something, all buzz words in the challenge to educate our community about bullies. In today’s society there is still more than ever the need to speak out against bullying. Bullying is not just a problem in our schools but the community and workplace as well.

Every January folks make resolutions to a healthier new start. Maybe it’s getting some exercise, more rest or simply eating better. Whatever the choice making a change is what any resolution is all about.

Many families are enjoying the Christmas break with hopefully some outdoor activities. Keeping active is one way to shed the excess “turkey pounds” we might have put on. Whether going for a walk, playing hockey, on some skis or a snowmobile ride, keep in mind that your actions have consequences. All things happen for a reason, and don’t let alcohol be the reason this season.
