'The Green Movement' is upon us; Raiders unveil new jerseys

Although the Prince Albert Raiders unveiled their completely new team jersey Thursday at the Art Hauser Centre, there is a certain familiarity with it.

The Raiders have officially traded in their all black uniforms for green, the same colour the team wore when they won the Memorial Cup back in 1985.

According to the Raiders, the change back to green was one highly demanded by fans.

Raiders renew contracts of GM Campese and head scout Derkatch

The two architects of the Prince Albert Raiders will be sticking around.

The team announced Tuesday that general manager Bruno Campese and director of player personnel Dale Derkatch have both agreed to two-year contracts with an option year to keep them with the team through the 2015-2016 season.

Former Prince Albert Raiders great James Patrick was fired Thursday as an assistant coach from the Buffalo Sabres, according to reports from the Associated Press.

Patrick, along with fellow assistant Kevyn Adams were both let go by head coach Ron Rolston, two days after Rolston was named the Sabres’ permanent head coach.

Patrick just finished his seventh season as an assistant coach with the Sabres, spending most of the time with former head coach Lindy Ruff, who was fired at the start of this season and replaced by Rolston.

Two time Telus Cup winner joins Raiders staff

The Raiders have recruited a former Minto to round out its marketing staff. Tom Brown joins the organization after earning a management degree at Michigan Tech University.

Brown was a key defenseman for the Mintos while winning their first national title in 2006 in Charlottetown PEI and captained the team to the 2007 championship in Red Deer.

Before heading to the NCAA, Brown played for the Melfort Mustangs and was a member of Team West at the world junior-A hockey challenge.

Raiders goalie prospect Zentner to have great resume

Prince Albert Raiders prospect Matt Zentner will have a resume of very rare accomplishments under his belt when he comes into training camp this fall.

With the Red Deer Chiefs, Zentner won back-to-back Telus Cup national midget AAA hockey championships, one of just four teams to do that in the tournament’s history which dates back to 1978 (the Prince Albert Mintos won back-to-backs as well in 2006-2007).

Raiders to change up their look

For the upcoming season, the Prince Albert Raiders will revamp their look.

As the team announced Thursday, they will reveal their new appearances during a public unveiling, "The Green Movement,"  May 16th at the Ches Leach Lounge.

There is no official word as to what exactly will be shown at the unveiling as the team is keeping that a surprise.

The Prince Albert Raiders draft class this year will have a good balance of skill and size, personified by their first round choice Jake Kryski.

Kryski is a 5"11" 155-pound centre had 59 goals and 59 assists in 58 games and was plus-96 for the Burnaby Winter Club this season, drafted by the Raiders with the 13th pick.

Although they took him at 13, Raiders director of player personnel Dale Derkatch and his scouting staff had him rated a lot higher than that.

Raiders select a centreman and huge d-man from B.C. at the WHL Bantam Draft

 

The Prince Albert Raiders selected Jake Kryski of the Burnaby B.C. Winter Club with the 13th overall pick. The 5"11" 155-pound centre had 59 goals and 59 assists in 58 games and was plus-96. He also had 2 goals and 6 assists in 5 games at the St.Albert Bantam AAA tournament. He was also rated 13th overall by the Western Elite Hockey Prospects group.  

Director of Player Personel Dale Derkatch said they didn't expect Kryski to be available but are elated he was still around.

Former head coach Young responds after Raiders decide to part ways

Shortly after a board meeting on Tuesday, Raiders general manager Bruno Campese drove over to Steve Young’s house, to inform Young in person that the Raiders would not be renewing his contract.

Just a few hours after that, Young had to explain what happened to his three daughters, Tatum, 10, and twins Kaebree and Kienna, 8, when they came home from school.

Raiders ready for Thursday’s WHL Bantam Draft

Barring a trade, the Prince Albert Raiders will pick outside of the top-10 at the WHL Bantam Draft for the first time since the 2004 season.

The Raiders have the 13th selection at the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft Thursday in Calgary and although they’ll have to wait a little longer before making their first selection, Raiders general manager Bruno Campese takes that as a point of pride.

Morrissey named WHL scholastic player of the year

Raider defenseman Josh Morrissey is the WHL scholastic player of the year. In addition to an outstanding sophomore season on the ice (15 goals, 32 assists and a plus-14 rating), the 17-year-old maintained a 92.4% average while taking some of the toughest grade-12 courses Carlton Comprehensive high school has to offer.

Morrissey calls it an honor which is the result of hard work and an award that would not have been possible without a lot of help.

POLL: Raiders part ways with Young after second half struggles

The Prince Albert Raiders have decided to part ways with head coach Steve Young.

The team decided Tuesday during a board meeting that they will not renew Young’s contract, which expired after the conclusion of this year.

Young has been with the team since the start of the 2008-2009 season as an assistant and was the team’s head coach since October 2011.

Raiders general manager Bruno Campese said it was a very tough decision for him and the board to make.

The Raiders are looking for a new head coach.

It was announced on Tuesday afternoon that the contract of Steve Young will not be renewed.

Young was handed the head coaching reigns in October of 2011 and has remained behind the bench for the entire 2012/2013 season.

The Prince Albert Raiders finished fifth in the East this past season, but struggled in the second half and were swept by Red Deer in the first round of the playoffs.

Raiders prospect Zentner to Telus Cup finals, Parenteau to bronze

For the second straight year, the Red Deer Chiefs knocked the Saskatoon Contacts out of gold medal contention and beat them in the semifinals of the Telus Cup.

Two Prince Albert Raiders prospects, Chiefs goalie Matt Zentner and Contacts goalie Rylan Parenteau, did battle in the 5-1 Chiefs win, sending the Contacts to the bronze medal game.

Zentner made 23 saves while Parenteau made 18.

Morrissey nets winner in Canadian semi final win over the Finns.

A second period power play goal by Raider defenseman Josh Morrissey stood up as the winner moving Canada into Sunday's gold medal game at the world under-18 hockey championships.

Morrissey pinched in off the left point and lifted a high backhander into the Finnish net to give Canada a 2-0 lead at 4:54 of the second period. His goal came just 61 seconds after Morgan Klimchuk of the Regina Pats opened the scoring.

Prince Albert Raiders prospect goaltender Matt Zentner picked up his second win of the 2013 Telus Cup national midget AAA tournament as his Red Deer Chiefs dominated the Valley Wildcats 8-1. Zentner made 18 of 19 saves for the win to improve the Chiefs record to 2-1-1.

The other Raiders goalie prospect in the tournament, Saskatoon Contacts starter Rylan Parenteau led his team to their second tie of the tournament against the hosting Sault Ste. Marie Northstars.

Team Canada will move on to the semifinals at the IIHF U18 World Championships, as will Prince Albert Raiders defenceman Josh Morrissey.

Team Canada beat the Czech Republic 6-0 in the quarterfinal game Thursday in Sochi, Russia. Morrissey was held off the scoresheet but was +2 and logged 20 minutes of ice time.

Both Prince Albert Raiders goaltender prospects battled against each other at the 2013 Telus Cup, and neither got the win.

Rylan Parenteau and the Saskatoon Contacts tied Matt Zentner and the Red Deer Chiefs 5-5 Wednesday in their third game at the Telus Cup in Sault Ste Marie.

Zentner entered the game in the second period as Parenteau played the entire sixty minutes.

Both teams are in the middle of the table in the tournament with a win, a loss and a tie.

Two Raiders make final NHLCS draft rankings

The Raiders have two players in the final NHL Central Scouting rankings for this June's draft.

Defenseman Josh Morrissey is rated 27th among North American skaters. The assistant captain who spent the season matched against the best forwards from around the WHL is also wearing an "A" for Team Canada at the world under-18 championships in Sochi Russia.

Team Canada will head into the IIHF U18 World Championships with a perfect 4-0 record and Raiders forward Josh Morrissey is a big part of that.

The draft eligible defenceman had two assists in Canada’s 6-0 win over the previously undefeated Team Sweden Wednesday in Sochi, Russia.

Morrissey had two goals and six points in four group stage games with Team Canada, tied for fifth in the tournament and second in scoring for a defenceman.

As hosts, the Bentley Generals won the Allan Cup national senior men’s hockey championship this weekend in Red Deer, with a roster boasting three Prince Albert Raiders alumni, Jeremy Colliton, Scott Doucet and Sean Robertson.

Colliton helped lead the Raiders to the WHL Conference Finals in the 2004-2005 season, the last of his four years in PA. Colliton had 176 points in 229 career games, all with the Raiders.

Prince Albert Raiders forward Leon Draisaitl had a colossal game for his native Team Germany at the IIHF U18 World Championships, getting five points in a 6-3 win over Slovakia.

Draisaitl had a goal and four assists in the game to lead Germany to their first victory in three games. Draisaitl now has six points in three games, tied for second in the tournament in points. He’s +5 on a German team that is -7 in goal differential through three games.

Germany will play their last group game against Switzerland on Tuesday.

Former Raider goalie Siemens commits to UofA

On March 27 moments after his Prince Albert Raiders were swept by Red Deer Rebels in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs, a teary eyed 20-year-old in Luke Siemens knew his junior hockey career had come to an end.

He came out of the Art Hauser Centre dressing room and had little to no idea about what the future would hold for him.

Fortunately for him, it didn't take long at all to figure that out.

Morrissey helps lead Canada to opening day win at U-18's

Josh Morrissey showed why he is worthy of wearing an "A" for Team Canada in their opening game of the world under-18 hockey championships in Sochi Russia.

He assisted on Connor McDavid's power play goal late in the first period which stood up as the winner in a 4-1 victory over Slovakia. McDavid also picked up a pair of assists. 

The Canadians dominated on the shot clock with a 35-13 margin while also killing off eight penalties.

Hockey Canada announced the final Team Canada roster for the U18 World Junior Championships in Sochi, Russia April 18-28 and it should be no surprise Prince Albert Raider Josh Morrissey was named.

Morrissey played at the U18 WJC last year as an underaging defenceman, registering three assists in seven games on route to Team Canada’s bronze medal. Morrissey had eight points in five games at the U18 Ivan Hlinka tournament in the summer leading to Team Canada’s gold medal.
